Officially Teaching

What makes an art, art?

That has the same vibe as what I am experiencing right now on the 2nd of April 2023. My CT asked me to create my own IMS to be able to train myself on working with those but before I could even start, I began to think, what makes an IM, well an IM? Is it the fact that it can be read? Or because it shows the lesson? Or because the students can copy it? Well, either of them can be the answer, or neither. What I did was to write on a Manila paper brief definitions as I placed in my PPT some guide questions. It kinda looked lame and I don’t know, ‘Hindi pinaghirapan’ because that is like my first time actually writing IMs in class. Plus, my topic actually does not require one. Well, I can say that the first day of my teaching went well and so as the activity sheets I handed out to the learners. The first class did well with the lesson but I noticed how they hesitated to recite and even to ask questions and it is the same scenario with the second class, the students seem to have an invisible “do not cross” line in front of them.

Then we have the only Grade 11 section I am handling, they are the boss of their class. I am the teacher in there but why am I the one being bossed around? I mean, I get it that I must not be the boss but why does it feel like I’m a fellow student delivering a report? It feels I don’t know, belittling? And I don’t like the way they manipulate the lesson, they are so focused on copying everything from the PowerPoint that I don’t even know if they’re listening. I kept telling them to copy just the highlighted parts but nah, they copy everything and will always tell me to go back to the previous slide. I mean it is important to take notes but at least lend me an ear.

I can say, despite my IMs being a mess, my delivery went well and I even got some compliments from my CT. I will do a better job next time. And also, I think even if my first teaching to the Grade 11 class went horribly wrong, I will try to get them some day.
