February 27, 2023 marks the second time I am actually teaching a lesson and on this day, I almost lost my patience and voice as the first classes I managed to handle is not easy. I have observed my CT and my fellow Student Teacher manage them and I didn’t realize how students all react differently in a way that makes the teacher come up with different tactics. I told myself, so this is what creativity is for. Apart from the given fact that students are different in their own ways, they are also different in different topics or even teachers. In my case, they definitely want to test me.
1 pm in the afternoon is when I set foot in the first classroom for my actual teaching and this is the class I already know will give me a hard time. From the opening prayer alone, they are already going wild and are not aware maybe of my presence. After the opening prayer, the monitors begin to speak but there are some students who just cannot be still. I had a hard time before I managed to capture their attention and that alone is a testament that I am not giving off the vibe that I am the teacher. In the middle of the discussion, I tried to be as patient as possible because despite my attempts to interact with them, they just show that they are not interested. I call on someone to recite but because they are not taking me seriously, they are not reciting when I asked them to. I am already dreading for them as I am aware that my activity for them is not at all that easy. Because I am always interrupted in the middle of my discussion, I am always loosing track on what I am talking about. In the end, because I wasn’t able to handle them that well, the class finished one hour before the time.
My CT pointed out a lot for my area of improvement and that also gives me the actual realization that I am teaching Grade 7 students and the approach that my Literature professor used in us college students will not work on them as we have different levels of intellect. I was also asked to be more interactive and my questions should be encouraged to share so I decided to do some revisions in my way of asking questions. I am also asked to make myself look more presentable more specifically how my hair should not cover my face. Also, I was encouraged to also include the values of the poem to my discussion.
Overall, this day went by in a flash and this teaching marks my third hour through in my 15 hour minimun. I for sure have a lot of improvements and I will make sure that I will work on them. Next time I will be meeting with them, I will make sure to make it up to what I lack in the first time meeting with them.
