Any Questions?

Did you know that asking a question is an art? Yes, and fun fact, as a teacher, if you want students to give you the right answer, make sure to ask the right question. If you want an excellent answer, ask an excellent question. How is there a right and wrong question you may ask well there is indeed just as there are right and wrong answers.

I learned those during our seminar on the Art of Questioning with Dr. Zayda Asuncion on the 25th of January 2023. During this session, we were taught on the importance and purposes of questions and asking questions. We also learned the approaches on asking questions along with the characteristic of high-level and low-level questioning before we ended with the characteristics of a good question.

Growing up, I always thought that questions are just a set of sentences that ends with a question mark and it doesn’t matter what is in that question as long as it elicits an answer After the seminar, I began to look back on myself a few years back before I learned the Art of Questioning with one of the professors in the Language Department and Dr. Asuncion and I can’t help but feel embarrassed because of how I ask questions in the past. No wonder the teachers don’t know what to answer me, it is because my question does not know what it is asking.

In conclusion, there is always a right way to do something and that includes questioning. It doesn’t matter if you’re giving a question to a teacher, go a student, to your friend or to your parents, asking a question has to be done right.
